Having your own holiday home you can retreat to in the cold, winter months is one of the main reasons people choose to buy property abroad.
From the Canary Islands to Florida, you’re spoilt for choice if you want to spend your time chasing the winter sun. Similarly, there are a plethora of great options to choose from if you’re dreaming of a white Christmas.
To that end, we’ve put together a compilation of four of the most popular destinations for winter holiday homes, with something to suit every kind of weather enthusiast!
The Canary Islands
If you don’t want to take a long haul flight to reach your destination but do want to experience a vastly different climate, the Canary Islands may be the location for you.
With temperatures that are rarely too cold or too hot, every day is a beach day. The quality of seawater is excellent – with some likening the beaches to open air spas.
The region also has some of the longest daylight hours in Europe, so you can say goodbye to getting up and going home in the dark.
The island of Fuerteventura also gives you the option of taking up a new hobby, windsurfing!
Florida
Florida is another popular choice with people looking to escape the sometimes dreary British winters thanks to its year-round warm weather.
As the state is the size of England and Wales combined you should have no trouble finding the perfect area to buy your holiday home. Added to this, Florida is made up of a rich variety of cultures, making it easy for expats to feel at home.
Throughout winter you can take advantage of the 1,800 miles of coastline by fishing or taking part in a number of water sports.
In fact, from Disneyland to the Everglades, there’s always something to do!
Finland
If you’re not too bothered by the sun and would rather a chilly winter, Finland has plenty to recommend it.
Finnish people are said to be the happiest people in the world, and ranked at the number one position in the 2018 World Happiness Report, so there’s nowhere better to escape the winter blues.
With beautiful natural surroundings and fabulous food, Finland is a great place to have a winter holiday home.
Finland is also perfect if you want to winter somewhere with an essence of fairy tale about it thanks to the Northern Lights, snowy vistas and Santa’s reindeer.
Be prepared for the cold though, with temperatures dropping between -10°C and -20°C in the south and as low as -30°Cin the North.
Canada
If you’re looking for a holiday home destination outside of Europe, Canada could fit the bill.
The nation is known for its warm populace and strikingly varied geographies, and if you’re a fan of the great outdoors you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to activities.
Hiking, skiing and snowboarding are all popular pastimes and there are also events like the Quebec Winter Carnival (the world’s largest winter carnival) and Ottawa’s Winterlude (where you can skate on the world’s largest skating rink).
Depending on where you settle, you may need to pack your thermals. During the height of winter temperatures can get well below freezing, falling to around -20°C in Eastern Canada.
