The most popular winter season jobs in the US are usually found at ski resorts. Roles include:
 
  1. Ski and Snowboard Instructor

As a ski and snowboard instructor, you will enjoy your winter on the slopes teaching others how to improve and harness their skills. To be hired in this position, you will require the relevant qualifications and experience.
 
  1. Ski Patrol

Similarly to a lifeguard, you will be looking out for the safety of others. For this position, you’ll need to be a confident skier and will require relevant first aid qualifications. This is because you’ll often be the first to attend any skiing-related incidents.
 
  1. Chalet Host

A chalet host is responsible for the guests during their stay. In this role, you will have a diverse range of duties, from picking guests up from the airport to settling them into their hotels, to taking them on ski trips around the mountains.

Ski resorts offer high-end food and they are always on the lookout for highly skilled chefs who are capable of working under pressure. This can often be a challenging environment, with quality food expected to be prepared within a short space of time.
 
  1. Nanny and Childcare

This involves looking after children whilst parents/guardians head out onto the slopes. This can be a lucrative job as parents often tip generously, grateful that their children are being looked after. This role can be both rewarding and exhausting!
 

The paperwork particulars

There is a diverse range of opportunities to work seasonal positions in the US. To turn the dream into reality, you need to fill out the relevant paperwork and gain the appropriate visa.

If you are aged over 18 and in full-time study at university, you can apply for the J1 visa.

With the J1 visa, you can be employed in the US for up to four months and will be able to travel the country for 30 days after your employment ends.

A J1 visa costs £145 from the UK and you will have to attend an interview at the US Embassy. You will also have to provide evidence of sufficient funds for the duration that you’re in the US ($800-$1200).

Of course, you are able to leave the US before your visa officially ends if you wish.

Another option is the H2B visa. This is open to both students and non-students.

To gain the H2B visa, you will need to be aged over 18, be able to speak English and not be a skilled worker in a specific industry.

With the H2B visa, you will be able to work in the US for up to three years across various sectors, including seasonal positions.

There are also a number of international companies which support individuals with finding employment across the US, as well as provide visa sponsorship.
