April's Monthly Wrap: Packing in the 9-5? This destination could offer the world’s best retirement

currency-newsApril's Monthly Wrap: Packing in the 9-5? This destination could offer the world’s best retirement
Looking to retire abroad to enjoy sun, sea and sand?

Picking where to settle can be tricky, which is why Coastal Living magazine has put together its top places around the globe to live, based upon the tastes and requirements of retirees.

Taking top spot in the rankings is Alys Beach in Florida, a stunning development nestled where the sparkling waters of the Gulf of Mexico meets the pure white beaches and verdant greenery of Florida’s northwest coastline, under 40 minutes’ drives from Panama City.

The town was designed and built to make the most of the fantastic location, with a key focus on healthy lifestyle and sustainability. Palm-lined streets mix thriving greenery with clean white architecture, upscale homes, fine restaurants and shops interspersed with parks and water features.

The streets form a well-connected and beautiful network that encourages cycling and walking, and are built from an innovative cobblestone design to allow excess rainwater to filter through into the soil beneath. The buildings include many hidden features to fortify them against the worst the elements can throw at them, making the whole town safe and enduring.

The beautiful white homes not only look stunning, they also reflect the sun’s heat and help to keep the town cool. Clever construction and cutting-edge materials keep running costs low by preserving heat and increasing energy efficiency.

There’s plenty to do in this paradise including (of course) hitting the beach, which gets its amazing colour from the fact it is nearly pure quartz; tiny fragments of the Appalachian Mountains were eroded over time and carried by water down to the coast. As well as the beach, there is also a nature trail, a lake, numerous parks, shops, restaurants and bakeries, a fitness centre and tennis courts. Everything you need for an active and fulfilling life is contained within just 158 acres.

Eateries include Caliza Restaurant, where you can enjoy contemporary America cuisine al fresco and relax at the open air bar, overlooking the stunning swimming pool. George’s is a friendly, cosy establishment offering ‘brilliantly creative, fresh coastal fare’. The town’s café, wine bar and book shop Fonville Press offers a great array of beverages, snacks and lunches. Meanwhile, Charlie’s Donuts van serves fresh, homemade donuts and pastries that are likely to quickly become a breakfast favourite.

After all that delicious fare, you might find yourself in need of some exercise. The nature trail is perfect for this; a 20-acre preserve featuring a near-two kilometre elevated walkway that is perfect for walking or cycling (there’s also a bike shop in town), that takes in dense pine forest, streams and a rare coastal dune lake - Lake Powell.

You could also take to the tennis courts, or work out in the fitness centre, which includes top-of-the-range equipment, group and one-on-one classes, as well as personal training services.

Does this sound like the kind of paradise where you’d like to spend your golden years?

Unfortunately, all this luxury comes with a hefty price tag; current properties for sale in the development are on the market for between US$1.5 million and US$4 million.

That might put it a bit out of most people’s reach, but it’s nice to dream!
